Only Human
Band: Popup Single: Chinese Burn Out: Now on download, 7” out 22nd January
My mood can affect the way I review. I can’t help it, I’m only human and a rather imperfect sample of one at that. So with this in mind things weren’t looking good for Scottish band Popup when I picked up their single knowing nothing about them, only that I was in a bad mood and trying to clear my desk which was beginning to give out under the weight of sticky notes and demos. However, the moment I put it into my CD player the masterpiece that is their new single ‘Chinese Burn’ grabbed me, shook me, slapped me a few times and left me shocked at its brilliance. It has now been on repeat for at least half an hour, an act which I’m trying to explain to my house mates as necessary for me to review it, but really I have turned into a stalker like, slightly creepy fan of the four piece with only the single and a press release for guidance on them. Gritty, catchy, indie-rock with guitars and drums clashing in spectacular noise like tunes which can and will make you dance like there’s an indie disco in your bedroom. Their thick Scottish accents only serve to make it even more brilliant, clawing at you while stroking at the same time the entire thing is full of attitude and lust. You really must hear it to know how great it is, to experience the fantastic feel good sensation the single leaves you with. Out on January 22nd on art/goes/pop and already available to download from www.resonancestore.com you need to get sucked into this single, it will stop you in your tracks.
